KINDS OF CONJUNCTION



CONJUNCTION


What is Conjunction?

Conjunction is a word or phrase to join word to word, phrase to phrase and sentence to sentence.

THERE ARE THREE KINDS OF CONJUNCTION:

COORDINATING CONJUNCTION
2
SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION
3
CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTION

1.      Coordinate Conjunction:
A kind of conjunction expresses or combine the two of words, phrases or sentenses in equal way (in the same level)



a.      For (karena)
b.      And (dan)
c.       Nor (atau tidak)
d.      But (tetapi)
e.       Or (atau)
f.       Yet (namun)
g.      So (Jadi)

FAN BOYS

EXAMPLE OF THE USE OF “FAN BOYS”:
1. For it rains today, I bring an umbrella.
2. John and I will go to Jakarta next week.
3. My mother doesn’t like meatball nor do I.
4. He is not Andrean’s father but Andrean’s uncle.
5. Will you go by taxi or bus?
6. Mr. Brown was very sleepy, yet he accomplished his research.
7. Mrs. Valencia and his assistant will present seminar matery, so they prepare it now.

2.      Subordinate Conjunction:
A kind of conjunction expresses or combine the two of words, phrases or sentences in the contrass way (It joins “Independent Clause and Dependent Clause”)
a.      Since , As, Provided, Until ,
b.      Because , Unless , After, That,
c.       So, If, Where, Although, Though, In order
d.      While, Whereas, When,
e.       Before, How

EXAMPLE OF THE USE OF “SAPU BUAT SI WATI, . WWW . . BH”
1.      Since I have been in West Borneo, I never visited my mother anymore.
2.      I have moved to Semarang since I was nine years old.
3.      Don’t forget to turn off the computer and its printer before leaving the room.
4.      While you were writing a letter, I was doing the work.
5.      In order to have a better result in the research, Mr. Joe needs some electronic devices to support it.

3.      Correlative Cunjunction.
A kind of Cunjunction used to link word to word, phrase to phrase or sentence to sentence in pairs form.
Functions:
To connect two items of  Subject
To connect two items of  Verb
To connect two items of  Object
To connect to items of  Adverb or Adjective

A.    Not only . . . . but also . . . .(Tidak hanya . . . tetapi juga . . . )
Not only . . . but also . . . means “And
Examples:
1.      Not only Hendrik but also his brother speaks France.
2.      Mr. Patrick did not only reads but also writes novels.
3.      The teacher did not only explain the lesson quickly but also clearly.

B.     Either . . . . or . . . . (Salah satu . . . atau . . . )
(It expresses the choice between the two items to choose one of another)
Examples:
1.      Either Mr. Andrew or Mr. Felix is flying to London now.
2.      Mr. Andrew either walks or rides a motorcycle to school.
3.      Hanny writes either a novel or a short story.
4.      My mother can run along this way either quickly or slowly.

C.     Neither . . . nor . . . (tidak salah satu . . . atau tidak . . . )
(It used to get no choice of one or another)
Examples:
1.      Neither the president nor his vice will attend the Cabinet meeting in Merdeka Palace tonight.
2.      The managers neither were sick nor healthy yesterday so that he didn’t come to factory anniversary event.
3.      Uncle Bent was neither a director nor a vice director.

NOTES:
1.      When we want to use the correlative conjunctions, we must consider about the Subject after the last pair of its conjunction to decide the type of the verb we will use.
2.      The negative expression of using “Neither . . . nor . . . can be changed with the pairs of  either . . . or”, but it also depends on its Subject after or to identify the type of not for its form.
3.      Examples:
Either John or Black will not go to the Safari Jungle Zoo in Surabaya.
Either Mr. Patrick or Mrs. De Lewy didn’t visit his college on Saturdays.
4.      When the pair of conjunctions come after verb, there is no big problem for us to identify it. We just include the object choice or adverb choice in it.

EXERCISES:
A.    NOT ONLY . . . BUT ALSO . . . (Translate them into English)
1.      Tidak hanya John tetapi juga istrinya pergi ke Bali untuk menghadiri pernikahan Raffi Ahmad dengan Githa.
2.      Pak Alex tidak hanya pergi ke London tetapi juga ke New York.
3.      Nyonya Clay tidak hanya membuat banyak kerajinan di rumahnya tetapi juga menjual kerajinan-kerajinan tersebut ke pasar modern.
4.      Guru itu tidak hanya memainkan pianonya dengan baik tetapi juga sangat berekspresi.
5.      Ibu saya atau bapak saya akan pergi ke Jakarta minggu yang akan datang.

B.     EITHER . . . OR . . . (Complete the sentences with the right form)
1.      Either Mr. Black . . . Mr. Jimmy will go to France next month.
2.      Either Mr. John or his students . . . (do) the research since three hours ago.
3.      Our principal has either . . . (move) to Australia or Malaysia since two days ago.
4.      . . . Miss Nany . . . her assistant did special work order yesterday.
5.      Either Miss. Handoyo or Mr. Brown . . . (to be) here last night.

C.     NEITHER . . . NOR . . . (Translate these sentences into Indonesian)
1.      Neither all of the students of Saint Albert grade IX is at school now.
2.      The scientist neither did the research nor announced the time of having research.
3.      Neither Aldo nor Patrick has gone to Bali since five days ago.
4.      My mother cooks neither instant noodle nor fried rice every morning.
5.      The lecturer is not presenting his matery either quickly and clearly.

D.    Complete the followings with subordinate conjunction!
1.       . . . is very cloudy, my sister doesn’t go to her friend’s house.
2.      I have a super natural power . . . I was a six years old child.
3.      . . . she was nine, she can speak France fluently.
4.      . . .  I have much money, I will buy a new bicycle for my little sister.
5.      The flowers have been watered by the gardener . . . blooming.
