What is Conjunction?

Conjunction is a word or phrase to join word to word, phrase to
phrase and sentence to sentence.
THERE ARE THREE KINDS OF CONJUNCTION:

A kind of conjunction
expresses or combine the two of words, phrases or sentenses in equal way (in the same level)

5. Will you go by taxi or bus?
6. Mr. Brown was very sleepy, yet he accomplished his

Subordinate Conjunction:
A kind of conjunction
expresses or combine the two of words, phrases or sentences in the contrass way
(It joins “Independent Clause and Dependent Clause”)

Correlative Cunjunction.
A kind of Cunjunction
used to link word to word, phrase to phrase or sentence to sentence in pairs
form.
Functions:
To
connect two items of Subject

connect two items of Verb
To
connect two items of Object

connect to items of Adverb or
Adjective

A.
Not only . . . . but also . .
. .(Tidak hanya . . . tetapi juga . . . )
Not only . . . but also . . . means “And”
Examples:
1.
Not only Hendrik but also his brother speaks France.
2.
Mr. Patrick did not only reads but also writes novels.
3.
The teacher did not only
explain the lesson quickly but also clearly.
B.
Either . . . . or . . . . (Salah satu . . . atau . . . )
(It expresses the
choice between the two items to choose one of another)
Examples:
1.
Either Mr. Andrew or Mr. Felix is flying to London now.
2.
Mr. Andrew either walks or rides a motorcycle to school.
3.
Hanny writes either a novel or a short story.
4.
My mother can run along
this way either quickly or slowly.
C.
Neither . . . nor . . . (tidak salah satu . . . atau tidak . . . )
(It used to get no choice of one or another)
Examples:
1.
Neither the president nor his vice will attend the Cabinet
meeting in Merdeka Palace tonight.
2.
The managers neither were sick nor healthy yesterday so that he didn’t
come to factory anniversary event.
3.
Uncle Bent was neither a director nor a vice director.

NOTES:
1.
When we want to use
the correlative conjunctions, we must consider about the Subject after the
last pair of its conjunction to decide the type of the verb we will use.
2.
The negative
expression of using “Neither . . . nor . . . can be changed with the pairs
of either . . . or”, but it also
depends on its Subject after or to identify the type of not for its
form.
3.
Examples:
Either John or Black will not go to the Safari Jungle Zoo in Surabaya.
Either Mr. Patrick or
Mrs. De Lewy didn’t visit his
college on Saturdays.
4.
When the pair of conjunctions
come after verb, there is no big problem for us to identify it. We just
include the object choice or adverb choice in it.
