Sometime when we want to study English, we will be very confused talking about “TENSES
We need more practice if we study English. English is not very difficult to learn.
The question is:
How to learn English easily?
Now I will tell you something about studying English easily.
What do we want to learn now?
Yeach, ......look at it.

SIMPLE PAST TENSE
What is it?
Simple Past Tense
Is
A kind of sentence used to express something we did or condition/ situation in the past time.
EXAMPLE:
One of the students of grade VIII C went to Borneo hotel to join the “Free Sex Seminar”.
My father was not at home.
Were they in front of the door yesterday?
PATTERN:
Positive Sentence:   Subject + Verb 2 + Object/ Complement.
Examples:
  1. Mr. Joko went to visit his father in Surabaya two days ago.
  2. Miss Hanna worked hard to prepare final examination  for her students.
  3. Patrick’s father put his keys on the cupboard.

Note:
When there is no Verb on its sentence, please use auxiliary verb!
Auxiliary verb in Past:
1.      Was
For subject I, He, She, It

2.      Were
For subject You, We, They

Examples:
I was sick yesterday.
Patrick and his friends were here last week.
The operator was very happy five days ago.

Negative Sentence:   Subject + did not (didn’t) + V 1 + Object/ Complement.
Example:
1.      Mr. Joko did not go to visit his father in Surabaya two days ago.
2.      Miss Hanna didn’t work hard to prepare final examination for her students.
3.      Mr. Patrick’s father did not put his keys on the cupboard.

Examples of the Sentences without Verb.
1.      I was not sick yesterday.
2.      Patrick and his friends weren’t here last week.
3.      The operator was not very happy five days ago.

Interrogative Sentence:  Did + Subject + Verb 1 + Object/ Complement
Examples:
  1. Did Mr. Joko go to visit his father in Surabaya two days ago?
  2. Did Miss Hanna work hard to prepare final examination for her students?
  3. Did Mr. Patrick’s father put his keys on the cupboard?

When the sentences don’t contains verb, the first auxiliary verb before subject are were or was depend on Its Subject.
Examples:
  1. Were you sick yesterday?
  2. Were Patrick and his friends here last week?
  3. Was the operator very happy five days ago?

After you understand the pattern of Simple Past Tense, now we will have exercises.

Complete the sentences, put the verb into the correct form, positive or negative. (In Simple Past Tense)

1. It was warm, so I off my coat. (take)

2. The film wasn't very good. I it very much. (enjoy)

3. I knew Sarah was very busy, so I her. (disturb)

4. I was very tired, so I to bed early. (go)

5. The bed was very uncomfortable. I very well. (sleep)

6. Sue wasn't hungry, so she anything. (eat)

7. We went to Kate's house but she at home. (be)

8. It was a funny situation but nobody (laugh)

9. The window was open and a bird into the room. (fly)

10. The hotel wasn't very expensive. It very much. (cost)

11. I was in a hurry, so I time to phone you. (have)

12. It was hard work carrying the bags. They very heavy. (be)
